The Harvest Dance – A Short Story from Our Table

Summer is slowly coming to an end. It’s still warm, and most days are sunny. As I sat outside basking in the sun, I was reminded of a short story my grandmother once told me when we were in the kitchen together and she was preparing dinner for the whole family. On the table lay freshly picked vegetables and fruit from my grandparents’ garden. I was delighted by the sight of dark burgundy cherries in a small bowl, green and red apples, and a wicker basket filled with various vegetables—leeks, beets, cabbage, and potatoes. Most of them had been peeled for a dish, and the black currants were waiting to be made into compote and sprinkled on a homemade fruit tart. I couldn’t take my eyes off all these wonderful things that Grandma had just brought from the orchard and garden.

Painting with my eyes,
what I see in that moment.
My fingers feel soft and fresh,
As I rub small pine cone
from beloved grandmom.
The air is steeped in the fragrance
and memory.
It`s a day that passes like this.
The cupboard opened a wooden, painted, forgotten drawer,
in which a beautiful story had long been resting,
a story that wanted to be read aloud
to a little one who couldn’t fall asleep that night.
It begins like this:

Small Beautiful Stories
None of these moments are big enough to be news. But they are big enough to stay with me.
When I walk — through a market, along a quiet street, past a row of houses with uneven windows — I feel as though the world is whispering. Not loudly. Not urgently. Just softly, as if to say: look, here is something you might like to notice.
And so I do. I notice the way light falls on a brick wall. The way two people lean toward each other when they talk. The way a leaf skims across the pavement like it has somewhere to be.
These tiny things become stories, not because they are dramatic, but because they are real. They remind me that life is made of moments we often walk past. They remind me that paying attention is a kind of love.
Small stories don’t need conclusions. They don’t need lessons. They don’t need to be anything other than what they are: brief, honest glimpses of the world being itself.
If you’re here, reading this, I hope you find a small story today — something quiet, something fleeting, something that makes you pause for just a moment.
(If you want to explore more, you can ask me about small stories or noticing.)
