“Curled and quiet,” whispered the ferns, unfurling their green fronds. “Old, but still listening,” rustled the oak leaves with their crinkled edges.
We gathered in a gentle circle around a shy little drawing — a small face, a leaf‑shaped hand, and a crown of dried petals.
Then, together, we began to speak her story. Softly. Simply. The way leaves and flowers speak when a child is listening.
We are only old oak leaves, dried and quiet now, but we have
seen many small things in our time. We watched you sit with your roses — the
red ones once bright, the white ones soft — and press their petals inside old
newspaper pages. We saw the colours change, the whites turning yellow and
brown, the reds settling into a deep village‑wine shade.
Then we watched you draw her — that little face in ball‑point
pen. A simple girl, like someone from a small village story. Her eyes stayed small and shy, as if she
belonged right there on the page, held by her leaf‑hand and the circle of
petals around her.
You placed the dried petals around her, making a border like
a tiny wreath. We rustled softly, liking how she looked surrounded by what once
bloomed.
And when you hung her near us, we gathered close — us oak
leaves, the buttercups with their sunny memories, and the ferns curling like
shy forest children. We framed her together, as if she were part of an old folk
charm, something made quietly by hand.
We are only leaves, but we know when something feels true.
Your little drawing carries a small story now — simple, gentle, and touched by
the woods.
